Amazon Affiliate Payment: Methods, Minimums, the 60-Day Delay and Why Your Payout Is Smaller Than the Report

The first Amazon Associates payment surprises almost everyone twice: it arrives two months later than expected, and it's smaller than the number on the report. Neither is an error. Amazon's payment system has a fixed timetable, a return window built into it, and three ways to be paid with different minimums, and once you know the mechanics the report and the payout reconcile.

This post covers the payment methods and their minimums, the timetable and why it's 60 days, what gets taken back before payment, the tax step that holds payments up, where to see what you've been paid and for what, and how to tell a normal shortfall from a real problem. The missing commission post covers the report side; this one is the money side.

The short answer

Amazon pays monthly, about 60 days after the end of the month the commission was earned, for items that have shipped. Direct deposit and gift card pay from $10; cheques from $100 with a $15 fee in the US.

Returns and cancellations in that window are deducted, which is why the payout is usually a little under the month's report. Complete the tax interview first or nothing is paid at all. The payment history page in Associates Central shows every payment and the month it covers.

Payment methods and minimums

MethodMinimumFeeNotes
Direct deposit$10NoneThe default for most; bank details in Associates Central. International: supported countries only
Amazon gift card$10NoneClaim code emailed to the account address; fine for small balances, no use if you want cash
Cheque$100$15 per cheque (US); waived outside the US when direct deposit isn't availableSlow and expensive; last resort

Amazon's payment type help page has the current figures for amazon.com; other stores set their own in local currency. A balance below the minimum isn't lost; it rolls forward until a month clears the threshold.

The timetable

Commission is earned when an item ships, not when it's ordered. At the end of each month, Amazon totals the shipped commissions for that month, holds them for roughly 60 days, and pays. So:

The 60 days exist because of Amazon's return window. Most returns happen inside 30 days of delivery; the hold lets Amazon net them off before paying rather than clawing money back afterwards. It also means your first payment on a new account comes roughly three months after the first sale, which is the part new affiliates mistake for a problem.

What's taken off before payment

The tax step

No payment is made until the tax interview in Associates Central is complete: a W-9 for US persons, a W-8BEN (or W-8BEN-E for companies) for everyone else.

It takes ten minutes and most people do it at signup, but an account that's earning and not being paid is usually one where it was skipped. Check under Account Settings → Tax Information; a status other than "complete" is the hold.

Reading the payment history

Associates Central → Payments → Payment History lists each payment with the date, amount, method, and the month it covers. Match a payment to the "shipped" earnings for that month, two months earlier, in the Reports section, and the difference is the deductions above.

The reports give you three figures for any month: ordered items, shipped items and returned items; the payout tracks shipped minus returned. Ordered is the number that's always higher and always the one people quote.

Several stores, several payments

Each Amazon store is its own programme with its own payment. An affiliate with amazon.com, amazon.co.uk and amazon.de accounts gets three payments in three currencies, each on its own 60-day clock, each with its own minimum.

Small balances in a secondary store can sit under the threshold for months; a gift card payout clears them if cash isn't the point. The international stores post covers setting those accounts up.

Doing it with AffSERP

Payment is between you and Amazon; what AffSERP affects is what shows up in the report. Guides written by the X Best Review tool carry your Associates ID on every link and can use a tracking ID per site, so the shipped-earnings report splits by site and the payment history reconciles against it site by site.

The Refresh option keeps picks in stock, which matters here because an out-of-stock pick sends a click that orders nothing and earns nothing in any month.

FAQ

When does Amazon pay affiliates?

About 60 days after the end of the month the commission was earned in, and only once items have shipped. January's shipped sales are paid at the end of March. The delay covers Amazon's return window, which is why the figure you're paid can be lower than the month's report showed.

What is the minimum payout for Amazon Associates?

$10 for direct deposit and for an Amazon gift card; $100 for a cheque, which also carries a $15 processing fee in the US. If a month's balance is under the minimum it rolls into the next month until it clears. Thresholds differ a little by store; these are the amazon.com figures.

Why is my Amazon affiliate payment less than my earnings report?

Four reasons, in order of likelihood: returns and cancellations in the 60-day window were deducted; some orders hadn't shipped by the cut-off and move to the next payment; the report you looked at was 'ordered' rather than 'shipped'; or tax withholding applied because the tax interview wasn't completed.

Does Amazon pay affiliates outside the US?

Yes, from each store's own account. Amazon.com pays international Associates by direct deposit to supported countries, by gift card, or by cheque (fee waived if direct deposit isn't available to you). Other stores (UK, DE, CA) pay in their own currency from their own programme, so an affiliate in several stores gets several payments.
